We’ve all heard the old adage, “As you think, so you become”. So why not think something lofty, something transcendent? That is the theory behind the use of sacred mantras. A mantra is a “sound formula”. It’s usually a short collection of holy words or syllables which effect the one chanting, and the listener as well. It’s almost like taking a pill. If we meditate on the mantra om shanthi , we will begin to feel its peaceful vibrations permeate our being. Chant a mantra, and you will become one with it.
An ancient chant to move you along the enlightenment path is the Gayatri Mantra. Taken from the Vedic scripture, it is often chanted at dawn and at dusk. A pithy but inspired translation by Swami Vivekananda goes like this:
- “We meditate on the glory of that Being who has produced this universe; may He (or She) enlighten our minds.”
Here’s what the Sanskrit transliteration looks like.
Oṃ bhÅ«r bhuvaḥ svaḥ Tat savitur vareṇyaṃ Bhargo devasya dhÄ«mahi Dhiyo yo naḥ prachodayÄt
